Meet 7 year old Spencer--expert swing jumper, monkey bar extraordinaire, and big brother to 1 year old Henry. When he's not busy flying around the jungle gym like a superhero, Spencer watches over Henry like a hawk, protecting him from whatever danger may arise. It's not the easiest job but it has it's perks like first dibs for life as well as unconditional admiration and awe. Like Arthur the Aardvark said, "Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero."
To celebrate the arrival of a new grandchild, most grandparents will give gifts like a silver spoon or a homemade crochet baby blanket; if you're lucky maybe a nice check too. For 7 month old Liam, Grandpa got him a rocking baby elephant from Ghana, hand carved from a single piece of indigenous wood! How cool is that?! In a few years, I can only image what show-and-tell at school will be like for Liam. "My grandpa lugged this elephant all the way from Ghana...but yeah that's a nice stuffed animal you've got there."
For most kids, going to a park and not being allowed to play right away is like asking a chocoholic to go to a candy store and not buy anything. Thankfully, 6 year old Rowan and his 10 month old sister Mackenzie were amazingly well behaved and made it through an hour of shooting before parent pros Michelle and Maggie had to whip out any toys. And what was the carrot at the end of the stick? Why the opportunity to chase and squirt your parents in a water gun fight of course! "Great idea!" said the photographer. "Just don't get the camera wet!"
It is always difficult to get family members to all be in the same place at the same time, let alone in the same picture! So when Pam asked me to do a family photo shoot at her sister's graduation party I was happy to oblige. Formal portraits are indispensable and timeless, but personally, I've got a soft spot for the shenanigans going on behind the perfect picture!
