FOCUS FRAME WORKSHOP 2026

Turn Summer Into a Creative Adventure

An immersive teen photography workshop in a private studio loft, designed to teach real skills, spark creative confidence, and help teens tell their own visual stories.

Session 1: Mon 8/3 – Sat 8/8

Session 2: Mon 8/10 – Sat 8/15

Real Skills. Real Fun. Real Confidence.

A creative space for teens who want more than just another summer program

Parents want their teens to spend summer wisely; ideally learning something meaningful. Teens want their summers to be relaxing yet fun and inspiring. Focus Frame gives both:

  • Teens gain hands-on DSLR experience, learning how exposure, lenses, and settings affect their photos

  • Student-driven activities balance structure and freedom, so teens explore without feeling lost

  • Small group, supportive environment encourages creativity, confidence, and collaboration

  • Finished zine lets teens see their work physically printed, to be proudly shared with the world

  • Teens connect with peers who love creating just as much as they do

Two Unique Experiences, One Summer of Growth

Focus Frame runs as two separate 6-day sessions this summer. Each week has its own theme, projects, and zine so students can take one week or both without repeating the same experience.

Session 1: Aug 3–8
Fragments of Summer: The Details Edition

This week is all about learning to see like a photographer.

Students will build strong DSLR fundamentals while photographing the small, overlooked moments of summer — light through windows, textures, colors, objects, shadows, and visual “fragments” that tell a story without needing people in the frame.

Best for:

  • First-time DSLR students

  • Teens who love noticing details, design, and mood

  • Anyone who wants a strong technical foundation + creative confidence

Final project:
Each student creates a curated zine spread capturing their personal “Fragments of Summer” photo story.

Session 2: Aug 10–15
Summer in Motion: The Story Edition

This week is about learning to tell a story through images.

Students will build on their technical skills and focus on movement, sequencing, and visual storytelling — creating photographs that feel cinematic, intentional, and full of point of view.

Best for:

  • Teens who want their work to feel more dynamic and narrative-driven

  • Students who love motion, action, and storytelling

  • Anyone who wants to deepen their skills beyond the basics

Final project:
Each student creates a photo essay-style zine spread using sequencing and storytelling techniques.

Session 1 builds confidence and camera control…

Session 2 takes those skills and turns them into storytelling…

Together, they create a complete photography experience

Learning how to SEE & Learning how to TELL

More than photos, but
Skills they’ll keep

  • Learn DSLR basics and how camera settings shape your photos

  • Explore storytelling, composition, and visual thinking

  • Build confidence capturing and curating your own photo series

  • Participate in collaborative critique and discussions

  • Finish a personal zine to take home and share

What will teens gain?

The Perfect Place for Creativity

Hi, I’m Julia

I’m a documentary photographer and creative educator based in New Jersey. But more importantly, I am someone who genuinely loves helping teens figure out how to trust their own creative voice.

For over a decade, I’ve photographed more than 100 families, capturing real, unscripted moments. My work has been recognized by the Documentary Family Awards, LensCulture’s Home ’21 International Photography Prize, and featured in The Washington Post and The Star-Ledger. But awards aren’t why I teach.

I live for the moment when making art clicks for my students—the technical and creative sides. When my students feel empowered to share their point of view, it is like witnessing magic.

Before launching Focus Frame, I taught general art education—guiding students through storytelling, composition, and building creative confidence. Homeschooling my own two daughters has also shaped my approach to teaching: with patience, clarity, and respect. I believe in skill-building, experimentation, and creating a space where students feel safe to try.
